The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has voiced deep concern over the government’s decision to recruit only 7,000 teachers, even though more than 10,000 trained graduates from Colleges of Education and other tertiary institutions are still awaiting employment.
The Association described the move as troubling and disappointing, particularly in light of earlier assurances made by the Finance Minister during the 2025 base pay negotiations, where plans were outlined to increase recruitment across the public sector, including the education sector.
Addressing the media during the Association’s National Council meeting held at Ejisu-Abankro, the National President, Prosper Tachie, emphasized the need for the government to significantly raise the number of teachers being recruited.
He further appealed to authorities to give priority to graduates who completed their training earlier, before considering newly qualified teachers.
Additionally, the GNAT President cautioned that the growing number of unemployed trained teachers could become a serious concern for national security if not addressed promptly.
The Association also highlighted delays by certain employers in transferring pension deductions to the appropriate fund managers. According to GNAT, these delays have led to the imposition of heavy penalties.
As a result, the Association is urging strict adherence to pension remittance obligations to protect the retirement benefits of workers.
