Shut colleges of Education if teachers can't be employed - TTAG tells gov't

Colleges of Education Face Closure Threat Over Teacher Employment Crisis – TTAG

The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) has intensified its call for immediate reforms to the country’s teacher posting system, cautioning that Colleges of Education could face closure if the government fails to employ the increasing number of trained teachers.

According to the association, the growing backlog of qualified teachers awaiting placement, coupled with limited recruitment opportunities, is weakening trust in Ghana’s teacher training system and raising concerns about its long-term viability.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the national secretariat on Wednesday, April 22, TTAG President Nanija Devine criticized the government’s recent decision to recruit 7,000 teachers, describing the figure as insufficient.

He stressed that the number falls short of addressing the needs of the workforce and urged authorities to expand recruitment to accommodate all trained teachers. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining the policy of automatic postings for graduates.

Mr. Devine further pointed out the magnitude of the issue, revealing that over 45,000 trained teachers are currently without postings, while more than 65,000 students remain enrolled in Colleges of Education.

He questioned the future prospects of those still undergoing training, noting that uncertainty surrounding employment undermines the purpose of their education.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, he warned that if the government is unable to recruit the backlog of trained teachers, then the continued operation of Colleges of Education may need to be reconsidered.
