Haruna Iddrisu Assures Expansion of 7,000 Teacher Recruitment Slots

Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has indicated that the government is considering an upward review of the recently announced 7,000 teacher recruitment slots. This follows mounting concerns from teacher unions regarding the adequacy of the figure.

The response comes after the Ghana National Association of Teachers and other unions raised objections, stating that the current allocation does not sufficiently address the employment backlog. According to them, more than 10,000 trained graduates from Colleges of Education and other tertiary institutions are still awaiting placement.

Speaking during the May Day celebrations held in Kumasi on Friday, May 1, the Minister admitted that the existing quota is not enough to meet the country’s needs.

He pointed out that while 15,000 recruitment slots have been assigned to health workers, the number allocated to teachers remains significantly lower, despite the broader reach of the education sector.

Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that there is a valid reason to increase teacher recruitment, noting that Ghana has a higher number of schools compared to hospitals nationwide.

He acknowledged that the current figure falls short and assured that efforts are underway to review and increase the number of available slots.

The Minister further stated that the government is committed to resolving the issue and will continue consultations with key stakeholders to ensure that recruitment levels better reflect national demands.
