Wonsaakab Academy, a newly formed youth-driven and not-for-profit organisation, has made a strong entry into community development with the successful organisation of its maiden flagship event — an End-of-Year Football Gala in the Bunkpurugu District of Ghana’s North East Region.
The two-day event took place at the Jilig JHS Park on 30th and 31st December 2025 and attracted young people from various communities across the district. Using football as a unifying force, the gala aimed to promote peace, social cohesion, youth talent discovery, and positive engagement. For many of the young participants, the tournament represented more than a sporting contest; it provided a platform for expression, motivation, and inspiration.
Throughout the competition, local teams showcased their skills in a lively atmosphere marked by sportsmanship and respect. The event drew the attention of community members, youth advocates, and football lovers, transforming the venue into a vibrant hub of interaction and celebration.
The tournament reached its peak on 31st December when Bimbagu All Stars emerged as champions. The victorious team was presented with trophies, medals, and cash rewards, creating a memorable moment for players and supporters alike.
Speaking on the organisation of the event, the founder of Wonsaakab Academy, Daniel Jatuat, highlighted the strong collaboration with the District Police Command and the Ambulance Service. Both institutions were present throughout the two days to ensure security, safety, and emergency readiness. Their involvement underscored the Academy’s dedication to proper planning, safety, and community welfare.
Beyond football, the gala carried a deeper purpose. Wonsaakab Academy was established with the vision of closing the digital gap and empowering young people in the Bunkpurugu District and the broader North East Region through education, technology, and meaningful opportunities. By launching its mission through a football tournament, the Academy demonstrated its understanding of youth engagement — connecting with young people through sports and shared experiences before directing them toward education, digital skills, and sustainable development.
The Academy expressed sincere gratitude to all individuals, partners, volunteers, donors, and supporters who contributed in cash, kind, and time to ensure the success of the event. Special appreciation was extended to Edmond Kombat, Elijah Moon, Hon. Tingoti Kombong, Abdul-Fatawu Dawuda, and Ras Gandhi for their financial support.
Looking forward, Wonsaakab Academy views this football gala as the starting point of a broader journey. Plans are already in motion to introduce digital literacy initiatives, ICT training, and youth empowerment programs designed to equip young people with relevant skills for the modern digital world.
From Jilig to the wider Bunkpurugu District, Wonsaakab Academy is laying the foundation for lasting change — empowering youth one skill, one opportunity, and one step at a time.
