GTEC Announces Temporary Suspension of Institutional Registration Applications

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has officially announced a temporary halt in the processing of applications for Institutional Registration. This notice, issued on Friday, 17th April 2026, is directed at the general public, prospective applicants, and all relevant stakeholders within the tertiary education sector.

According to the Commission, the suspension forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen quality assurance and improve regulatory standards. The move is intended to allow for a thorough review and refinement of existing frameworks, ensuring they align with current trends and best practices in tertiary education.

During this period, individuals or organizations seeking to establish tertiary institutions in Ghana through the Institutional Registration route are advised to consider the Institutional Accreditation pathway instead. This alternative is currently regarded as the appropriate process for establishing and operating such institutions.

GTEC further clarified that the directive does not affect institutions that have already been accredited under the existing Institutional Registration framework. These institutions are expected to continue their operations in line with the terms and conditions of their accreditation.

The Commission expressed its appreciation for the cooperation and understanding of stakeholders as it undertakes these measures to enhance the quality and integrity of tertiary education in Ghana.
