The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced the restart of the Ghana Card registration exercise for children between the ages of 6 and 14. The exercise is scheduled to begin in May 2026.
As part of the process, parents and guardians are required to present valid documentation when registering their children. The NIA emphasized that a genuine birth certificate issued by the Birth and Death Registration Office is the primary requirement. In cases where this document is unavailable, parents must accompany their children to the registration centre to complete the process. A valid Ghanaian passport may also be used. Additionally, in special circumstances where a child is under social welfare care, two social welfare officers may be required to verify the child’s identity.
According to the Authority, this phase of the registration exercise will focus specifically on residents in the Volta and Oti Regions. Parents and guardians in these areas are therefore encouraged to prepare all necessary documents ahead of time to ensure a smooth and successful registration.
Key Requirements for Registration
To complete the process, applicants must meet at least one of the following conditions:
- Provide an original birth certificate
- Present a valid Ghanaian passport
- Be accompanied by a parent or relative
- Be accompanied by a legal guardian
- Be verified by two social welfare officers (in special cases)
Notice for Other Regions
The NIA clarified that the current exercise is limited to the Volta and Oti Regions. Details regarding registration schedules for other parts of the country will be announced later. Parents and guardians outside these regions are advised to follow official communication channels for updates.
Registration Statistics
As of 21st April 2026, the NIA reported that 19,440,513 Ghanaians have been registered. Out of this number, 18,737,670 Ghana Cards have already been printed and issued.
