Speaking at the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Professor Seidu Al-Hassan disclosed that 416 of the graduates were postgraduate students, making up 43.5% of the total number. Within this group, 21 individuals earned Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, while 333 obtained master’s degrees, representing 80% of the postgraduate cohort. Additionally, 62 students received Postgraduate Diplomas.
He further indicated that 541 graduates, accounting for 56.5% of the overall figure, completed programmes in Nursing and Midwifery. These graduates are expected to serve in hospitals, clinics, and underserved communities, contributing to improved healthcare delivery and strengthening the country’s health system.
According to Professor Al-Hassan, the graduation figures highlight the university’s strong commitment to addressing national healthcare needs through education and training.
Beyond health-related programmes, he noted that UDS continues to make progress across various academic disciplines, including Agriculture, Natural Resources, Physical Sciences, Communication and Media Studies, Education, Health Sciences, and Business. He explained that graduates have been equipped with practical knowledge and skills to tackle key challenges such as food security, climate change, digital transformation, and economic development.
The Vice-Chancellor also pointed to the university’s increasing research output and expanding international partnerships, particularly collaborations under the Erasmus+ Programme, which have enhanced academic exchange and research capacity.
On infrastructure development, he revealed that several major projects have been completed to support teaching and learning. These include a School of Nursing and Midwifery Complex, a Health Sciences Laboratory Complex, a Twin Oval Auditorium, a Directorate of ICT Building, and a Dental Clinic.
The event was attended by Ali Adolf John, the Northern Regional Minister, who commended UDS for its role in advancing education and national development. He praised the university’s expanding infrastructure at the Tamale campus, noting that the new facilities would significantly enhance academic and research activities.
Mr. John also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting infrastructure development in higher education institutions to improve access to quality learning.
He encouraged the graduates to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship while taking advantage of opportunities under government initiatives such as the 24-hour economy policy. He further urged them to uphold integrity, service, and community engagement as they move forward into the next stage of their lives.
