GES Releases 2026/2027 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools



The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced the approved academic calendar for the 2026/2027 academic year for all basic schools across the country. The calendar covers Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools and outlines reopening dates, vacation periods, and the schedule for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).


According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of GES on 6th May 2026, school heads, teachers, learners, parents, and all stakeholders are expected to take note of the approved dates to ensure effective preparation for the academic year.

First Term – 15 Weeks

The first term for the 2026/2027 academic year will begin on 8th September 2026 and end on 17th December 2026.

Students will proceed on vacation from 18th December 2026 to 4th January 2027. A two-day mid-term break has also been scheduled for 5th and 6th November 2026.

First Term Schedule

Reopening Date: 8th September 2026

Closing Date: 17th December 2026

Vacation: 18th December 2026 – 4th January 2027

Mid-Term Break: 5th & 6th November 2026

Second Term – 12 Weeks

The second term will commence on 5th January 2027 and close on 25th March 2027.

Vacation for the second term will run from 26th March 2027 to 19th April 2027.

Reopening Date: 5th January 2027

Closing Date: 25th March 2027

Vacation: 26th March 2027 – 19th April 2027

Third Term – 14 Weeks

The third and final term of the academic year will start on 20th April 2027 and end on 22nd July 2027.

Vacation begins on 23rd July 2027, marking the end of the academic year.

2027 BECE Dates Announced

GES also confirmed that the 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be conducted from Wednesday, 5th May to Wednesday, 12th May 2027.

Public Holidays and Mid-Term Breaks

The Ghana Education Service reminded all stakeholders that public holidays within the academic year will be observed accordingly. Additionally, every term will include a two-day mid-term break for all basic schools.


GES urged heads of schools, teachers, parents, guardians, and learners to take note of the approved calendar and prepare adequately for a successful academic year.
